Summer fun at Lake Koocanusa

Adventure starts here—on 145 kilometres of sun-splashed water

There are lakes—and then there’s Lake Koocanusa.

Long, narrow and impossibly scenic, it stretches for 145 kilometres through the heart of the Kootenays, framed by mountain ranges that seem to rise straight out of the water. In summer, it becomes something else entirely: a place where time melts away, days seem endless and adventure feels effortless.

Just over the ridge from Trailhead, The Boathouse offers a direct connection to it all—an easy transition from forest to open water.

Big water. Endless possibility.

What defines Lake Koocanusa isn’t just its scale. It’s the feeling of space it creates.

With nearly 80% of its shoreline protected as Crown land, the lake remains remarkably undeveloped, its coves, beaches and inlets largely untouched . You don’t just visit the lake. You explore it.

One day might begin with a slow cruise along glassy morning water. Another with wakeboard runs under a rising sun. Or a spontaneous detour into a hidden bay where the only footprints are your own.

Here, there’s no single way to spend a summer day—only the sense that you can do something different every time you return.

On the water

Summer at Koocanusa revolves around the lake itself.

Boating is at the centre of it all—whether it’s a quick afternoon run, a full day of exploring, or anchoring offshore for a swim in water that can reach a remarkably warm 26°C in mid-summer.

Paddle quietly along the shoreline in a kayak. Drift into a quiet inlet by canoe. Or lean into the energy of waterskiing and wakeboarding on long, open stretches of calm water.

For those who prefer a slower pace, there’s something deeply satisfying about simply cutting the engine, diving in and floating with mountains all around, blue sky overhead and nowhere else to be.

Cast a line

Fishing here is both pastime and tradition.

Lake Koocanusa is home to rainbow trout, kokanee salmon and more, drawing anglers who return season after season for its quiet abundance . You can head out with a guide, take your own boat or simply fish from shore.

It’s less about the catch and more about the setting: early mornings, still water and that unmistakable sense of being somewhere blissfully removed from everything else.

Beaches, sandbars and hidden places

Part of Koocanusa’s magic lies in what you discover along the way.

Remote beaches appear around corners. Sandbars emerge as water levels shift through the season—most famously the late-summer “Little Hawaii,” where boats pull up and hot days stretch into long, warm evenings.

It’s the kind of place where plans dissolve—where you stop because it looks interesting and stay because it feels right.

Wildlife and stillness

Even in the height of summer activity, the lake never loses its sense of calm.

Look up and you might spot bald or golden eagles tracing the shoreline. Along the water’s edge: deer, elk, osprey. In quieter stretches, just water, summer breeze and the soft rhythm of movement.

It’s this balance—energy and stillness—that defines the Lake Koocanusa experience.

The Boathouse: Your basecamp at the water’s edge

At Trailhead, adventure doesn’t require planning. It simply unfolds.

The Boathouse at Koocanusa is designed as a natural extension of the community’s way of life: a place to launch, gather and return. Morning departures. Midday swims. Evenings that linger a little longer than expected.

It’s not about owning the lake; it’s about belonging to it.

Adventure starts here…

At Trailhead, the forest sets the tone. The trails invite movement. The mountains shape the horizon.

And just beyond, Lake Koocanusa opens everything up.

Big water. Long days. Endless ways to explore. This is summer just as it should be.
